RVF400 Fork upgrade
Got this up grade kit from Rick O'liver. it includes 10Wfork oil, two springs that suit your weight, a syringe with a extention on it thats set to measure the right air gap and full instructions. Not bad for 80sterling.
1: Remove circlip from top of rebound adjuster and unscrew preload adjuster.
2: Unsrew fork cap while the fork is still in the bike.
3: Remove fork from the bike. Then you need to push down the spring spacer to expose the lock nut so you can unscew the fork cap fully to access the spring. Put a 17mm spanner on the lock nut and use a 32mm socket to unsrew the fork cap off.
4: Remove fork cap and spacers and give them a good clean. Make a note of which way they came out.
5. Remove spring and empty oil out of fork leg. The fork oil was in bits, I say it was in there from new! About 14 years. Then Pump the damping rod a few times to try and get all the old oil out and give it a clean.
6. Once empty compress the fork fully and push the damping rod all the way down. Then fill up with 445cc of 10W fork oil, pump damping rod a few times to get out air and check level. Should be 74mm from top of fork leg. Use syringe with 74mm extention to suck out excess oil.
7. Install new spring. Put back in spacers, push fork spacer down and screw on fork top onto damping rod. Use lockut and torque fork top to 35Nm. Slide up fork outer sleave and screw on fork top, set to 35Nm. Put back on preload adjuster and circlip and your done.
Forks are sitting much better now and feel like new. Only took about 2-3hrs and was handy enough.
